Mindfulness

Mindfulness Meditation is a Western, research-based, form of meditation derived from an ancient Buddhist practice known as Vipassana or Insight Meditation. It is about the mind-body interaction and is the practice of paying close attention to our inner and outer experiences that arise in the moment, non-judgmentally, with patience, and compassion.

In the context of psychotherapy, mindfulness helps patients to orient and focus their awareness on the impact of past events as they come up in the here and now. Patients are guided to observe selected elements of their internal experience in the present moment, and to verbally report what they notice as the experience is taking place. The use of mindfulness in psychotherapy helps patients regain social engagement, remain aware of the here and now, and mindfully observe the parts of their internal experience that support regulation and healing.
